I just wanted to correct something : in Bubble Bobble, you said there are 100 levels. Actually there are more : 200. I don't remember conditions to reach them however.

Ah! I'd forgotten all about that. It's a brilliant tip :) The game is a lot simplified from the arcade version, which I didn't discover until after I did this review, but I feel like the MS version is more fun and responsive. Lots of people say it's a poor game, including Hardcore Gaming 101, but I think it's a good fit for the Master System.

Back when I was a kid, this game's constant waves of enemies, chaotical platforming sections and the no HP and continue rules have made me angrier like few games have. It didn't even have a manual and thus I didn't knew Steven could high kick. And yet I felt that if Steven at least had some HP (which he DOES have during the boss fights), I could've enjoyed it a lot more. The music is great too and fits perfectly.

Tec Toy released the game here in Brazil as "Gang's Fighter" but made no edits to the game itself, so it still calls itself My Hero. As I've already said, it didn't have a manual.

"Near the end of level one, you kick four bulldogs’ faces off. I know you weren’t expecting that sentence."

What if I tell you that if you kick the last bulldog's rear end off instead, you get an extra life?

This game seems to have been made with exploration in mind. You look around for the places with many ring monitors to enter the special stages and by doing so you get to skip levels.
The problem is that the levels are far too short and lacking in fun obstacle setups, which I suppose must feel even worse to people who just want to get from point A to point B.

I mainly remember Sonic Chaos from one time I rented the game and somehow failed miserably to beat one of the last Special Stages... The final boss was also troublesome, too, I believe. Lots of HP and bouncing lasers made it an hard experience.

I remember this game on the SNES, I think I have a copy knocking about but not one I would return to that often.

Difficulty in a game can be excused, many games (I am thinking Contra and Ghouls & Ghosts) could be really hard when compared to a modern title, but they were fair. I have issues with a game that just frustrates with things like enemies spawning on top of you after pausing - clearly this has not been properly play tested.

Great review though, will be looking through some more for a Master System game that I actually want!

Cheers

And I have such fond memories of this game :( Specifically, all the gimmicks which you list (i.e. rocket shoes, mobile spring platforms, the ability to play as the hapless fox) are those which have stuck in my mind and not the game play.
Well, they do say you can't go back. I think every time I feel like playing a Sonic game I should just either dig out the original and best, or root around for Sonic CD.

I remember owning the Game Gear version of this and getting a lot of enjoyment out of it, but as you say it just isn't quite as satisfying as the first one. I loved the sprites, which I think are much nicer than Sonic 1, and the hang gliding sections (which I couldn't get enough of but I think that might be a personal thing rather than them actually having merit) but I do very clearly remember thinking that someone had cut some serious corners, especially with the size and complexity of the levels.
Still a fun and colourful platformer though!

Nice review :)

I remember the freezer level on this one being a particularly tricky section, all those falling objects along with the slide floor and touchy jump controls made for a few annoying deaths!

I like how you mentioned that pit of spikes, I found that amusing the first time I fell in it, but right at the end of the game there is a point where you have to pull a lever to get in the vault, I pulled the wrong lever with only one life left and visited the pit again, back to the start for me :D

I enjoyed the game overall though, not as good as the 16 bit versions but still fun :)
